The Famous Certification in Myanmar
The Myanmar Government has empowered the Ministry of Education’s Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) to act as the National Standards and Quality Department and National Accreditation Body (Myanmar Accreditation Body), as the responsible Authority for the Accreditation of Conformity Assessment Bodies in the country and manages the accreditation process ISO/IEC 17011 requirements. The Department of Research and Development (DRI) handles the Standards Development, Accreditation, and Metrology, and each division contributes to the ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality’s (ASEAN CCSQ) operations. It is also an affiliate member of IEC and has been involved in the regional work of ACCSQ (ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality) since 1997. The standard to the government can help the country as the basis of regulation, cost effective, high degree of acceptance, help governments and city planners build safer, cleaner and healthier environments.
The International Organization of Standardization (iso.org) acknowledged that the ISO Certificates which are mostly used by the major sectors in Myanmar are ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018. Based on the results of the ISO Survey (2020), there is a total of 247 certified organizations have implemented ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) , majority it’s from sectors Education (27 certified companies), Services (44 certified companies), Wholesale and retail trade (22 certified companies), and Electrical and optical equipment (20 certified companies).
Next, there are a total of 23 certified organizations that implemented an ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System). The significant certified companies are from electrical and optical equipment, recycling, textile products, rubber and plastics products, and engineering services. Besides, there are a total of 10 certified organizations that implemented an ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) are from Mining and quarrying, Food products, beverage and tobacco, Leather products, Metallurgy, and Engineering services.
While for food safety, Myanmar’s government has established The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995 as one of the divisions under the Department of Health to ensure the safety and quality of Food, Drugs, Medical Devices and Cosmetics in the country. FDA is responsible for issuing GMP certificates for local food manufacturing businesses, import and export recommendation, import and export health certification. Drug control activities include marketing authorization for new products, variation of existing authorization, quality control laboratory testing, adverse drug reaction monitoring, Good Manufacturing Practice inspection and licensing of manufacturers, wholesalers, enforcement activities, drug promotion and advertisements. FDA issues notification and import recommendation of medical devices and notification of cosmetics.
Conclusion
Based on the findings, we can conclude that Myanmar’s government is working aggressively to improve the quality and the standard regulation in the market, to ensure the product or service from the country are up to the international standard of requirements. In fact, Myanmar does not have much of an ISO Certification Body and thus, accreditation needs to be established from other countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia etc.
