ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS)
ISO 45001 is a standard of requirements for Occupational Health and Safety Management System to provide a safe and healthy workplace to employees and reduce workplace risk. The other relevant standards, such as OHSAS 18001, the International Labour Organization’s ILO-OSH 2001 principles, and different national standards were taken into account when developing ISO 45001. ISO 45001 was launched in 2018 – ISO 45001:2018.
This ISO standard mostly adopted by the heavy industries or the industries which are involve dangerous work, eg. Construction, Oil and Gas, Onshore, offshore, Steel Manufacturing, etc.
Who need ISO 45001 Certification?
It is applicable for any organization that wants to improve the health and safety of its employees during work. It also applies to OH&S risks under the organization’s control, considering elements such as the organization’s operating environment and the needs and expectations of its employees and other stakeholders.

History of ISO 45001
ISO 45001 was proposed at the ISO in October 2013 and there were at least 70 countries that contributed to the drafting process. However, the first draft failed to gain sufficient approval from ISO members and was revised in a second draft, which was approved and refined into a final draft. As a result, the standard was published on 12 March 2018, which is the current version. With that, it was a starting point for the three-year transition period from OHSAS 18000 to ISO 45001 from 2018 to 2021. In fact, this standard is based on OHSAS 18001, as well as International Labour Organization agreements and guidelines.
Certification process of ISO 45001
The organization that plans to get ISO 45001 can follow the ISO 45001 certification process below:
- Organizations need to understand the ISO 45001 standards requirements.
- Implement the ISO 45001 requirements in the organization’s process (Fine tune the internal procedure if needed)
- Implementing the new procedure with ISO 45001 requirements
- Select Internal audit team (require competency)
- Conducting internal audit to check on the implementation towards ISO 45001 certification
- Top management review the result of ISO 45001 implementation, objective and other mentioned in the ISO 45001 standard
- Appoint Accredited Certification Body for the external audit/3rd party audit.
- Rectify the finding or non conformity from the external audit/3rd party audit if there is
- Certification Award
